A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (or gas) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves form an integral component of an internal combustion engine and every cylinder in an engine atleast has two of them, i.e. an intake (intake of fuel-air mixture) and an exhaust valve (exhaust gases). A multi-valve engine can have three, four and sometimes five valves. Multi-valve engines generally promise increased efficiencies for fuel combustion. These days with BSIV emission norms in place most engine designs have a four valve system in place, two for intake of fuel and air and two for exhaust gases.
The opening and closing of valves is precisely timed to allow the engine to run efficiently in all conditions. In a four stroke engine, the intake valve(s) open up at the start of the suction stroke and the exhaust valves open up during the exhaust stroke when the piston returns from BDC to TDC.
The valves remain shut during compression and power strokes. The opening and closing of the valves are cam operated and various engines are further differentiated by positioning of the valve camshaft (OHV/OHC).
OHV(Overhead Valve) is an engine design where the camshaft is installed inside the engine block and valves are operated through lifters, pushrods and rocker arms, whereas OHC is a design where the camshaft is installed in the cylinder head and valves are operated by rocker arms/lifters. In case of a 4 valve engine, a DOHC design is used, where two parallel camshafts operate the intake and exhaust valves respectively.
As stated earlier, the function of the valve is to control the pressure of the gas on one side. The engine valve must be tight enough at all times. This valve cannot withstand stress if not rigid. The valves have to withstand a lot of pressure and heat, it is easy to guess. Inlet valves are always made with nickel-chrome steel. These valves are also made with chromium steel or stainless steel today. Along with it carbon carbon and manganese are also used. The Eggsot valve is made by Nicket Steel.
The valve seat in an internal combustion gasoline or diesel engine is the surface against which an intake or an exhaust valve rests during the portion of the engine operating cycle when that valve is closed. There are several ways in which a valve seat may be improperly positioned or machined. The normal cast iron cylinder valve valve does not work. But special alloy steel seating is no longer viable. They are mounted with screws or pressed together with cinder. Many engine valves are made of a richer material called seating. Those seats are quite stiff - a special cutter is used to cut them.

An overhead valve (OHV) engine, sometimes called a pushrod engine, is a piston engine whose valves are located in the cylinder head above the combustion chamber. This contrasts with earlier flathead engines, where the valves were located below the combustion chamber in the engine block. The camshaft in an OHV engine is located in the engine block. The motion of the camshaft is transferred using pushrods, and rocker arms to operate the valves at the top of the engine.
Technically, an overhead camshaft (OHC) engine also has overhead valves, however to avoid confusion, OHC engines are not usually described as overhead valve engines. Some early "intake over exhaust" engines used a hybrid design combining elements of both side-valves and overhead valves. While describing the cylinder before, it has been said that many times, multiple wells of different cylinders are connected by a tube and an overhead valve is placed on it.
